Living history, heritage and faith along the Mayflower Trail

Greetings from Pilgrim Country in England!

You are warmly invited to The Pilgrim Fathers Festival Weekend!

November 22nd – 25th 2007 will be an exciting four days of themed events in 'Pilgrim Country' to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim Fathers' attempt to leave this area and escape to Holland.

Visitors from overseas who are attending the Pilgrim Fathers Festival, and who are guests at either The Best Western Hotel or Ye Olde Bell Hotel are invited to a complimentary guided tour of the Mayflower Trail with us on Saturday 24th November 2007. Acclaimed author of the Mayflower Maid trilogy, Sue Allan, will be our guide for the day.

North Nottinghamshire's Bassetlaw District and its neighbouring districts pride themselves as the intellectual and spiritual birthplace of the United States of America. This area is where many Separatists from the Church of England – including leaders among the Pilgrim Fathers of the Plymouth Colony – were born and where they lived before making their first attempt to escape to Holland in 1607. This area of England was home to three of the first four signatories of the Mayflower Compact – the document considered the earliest example of democracy in the United States and the basis of the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution.

The autumn of 2007 is the 400th anniversary of the Separatists leaving the area, when attempting to escape to Holland on a chartered ship waiting for them in Boston, Lincolnshire, where they were betrayed and captured. They were briefly imprisoned there before escaping again and successfully reaching Holland from the Humber estuary in the spring of 1608. A core group of Separatists – led mostly by men from this area – remained in Holland for twelve years before crossing the Atlantic in the Mayflower in September 1620 and becoming the Pilgrim Fathers of America.

To celebrate these anniversaries and to promote the heritage of the Christian Separatists from the area, the Pilgrim Fathers UK Origins Association of which Pilgrim Tours is a member, was launched in April 2006 as an independent community association.
